Antoine Leclère (aspirant FNRS/ULiège) will present his ongoing work on constitutional law in the French Revolutionary Era in the Austrian Low Countries and Liège. French abstract Le droit de la principauté ecclésiastique de Liège intéresse autant qu’il intrigue. Dès l’Ancien régime, sa complexité rendit les tentatives de codification officielle impossible. Cette situation innerva les inquiétudes révolutionnaires qui, dès 1789, se portèrent sur la nécessité de mettre de l’ordre dans le vaste ensemble institutionnel et juridique de la principauté. Mes recherches doctorales s’axent sur l’aspect constitutionnel des entreprises légales de la Révolution liégeoise prise dans l’ensemble européen. Il s’agit de déterminer si les révolutionnaires ont substantiellement contribué à la mise en place de principes juridiques innovants sur le territoire liégeois ou, au contraire, s’ils se sont limités

(image source: KVAB ) Alumnus dr. Niels Fieremans (Joint PhD History (UGent), supervisors Prof. dr. Jan Dumolyn and Prof. dr. Dirk Heirbaut - Law (VUB), supervisor Prof. dr. Dave De ruysscher) wins the Erik Duverger Prize  of the Royal Flemish Academy for his dissertation  Law, leverage and litigation. The legal strategies of foreign merchants before the courts of late medieval Bruges, defended last June. Niels is currently postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University.  Our most sincere congratulations to the laureate ! The prize will be awarded on 9 December. More information on the KVAB website .

Abstract: Known as a journalist or 'compiler', Jean Rousset de Missy (1682-1762) contributed on the to the world's first treaty collections, the Corps Universel Diplomatique du Droit des Gens (1726-1731, edited by Jean Dumont). This contribution focuses on Les Intérêts présens des puissances de l'Europe (1733), a two-volume work published to serve as a practical alternative to the 8 volumes in-f° of the Corps Universel. Rousset discusses treaty obligations undertaken by sovereign entities, and links them up with an analysis of their long-term geopolitical interests. I sketch the impact of the Peace Treaties of Utrecht (1713) on Rousset's work, and argue that his treatment of the matter gives a unique insight into argumentative strategies. Parties in a quarrel use arguments drawn from the law of nature, Roman law, canon law, customary law, feudal law or domestic law, and only seldom refer to law of nations doctrine. French abstract: Les Nations Unies ont choisi, depuis leur création, de se tourner vers un régime linguistique multilingue. À partir de ce postulat, ma thèse a pour objectif de démontrer que ce choix a influencé et influence encore le droit international, que ce dernier soit primaire ou secondaire.  Il existe, en effet, de nombreuses problématiques pouvant expliquer l’influence que peut avoir le régime multilingue des Nations Unies sur l’élaboration et l’application du droit international notamment du fait de l’existence de divergences entre différentes versions linguistiques d’un même texte juridique.  Ces différences peuvent s’expliquer notamment par la difficulté de la traduction juridique, celle-ci étant due notamment à l’ambiguïté pouvant résider dans les textes internationau

  (image source:  Ostend Company Conference website ) In 1722-1723, Emperor Charles VI, Count of Flanders and Duke of Brabant, granted the charter of the Imperial East India Company in Ostend. The company's shares were traded on the Antwerp Stock Exchange. Its ships went to China and India. International pressure brought the Emperor to suspend (1727) and retract (1731) the charter, although clandestine activity continued until a lot later in the eighteenth century. As their project nears completion for publication in 2025, a new call to complete the questionnaire  on every edition is circulating. We encourage our readers to take part and provide them with as many indications on annotations, binding, iconography... as possible. More information here .
