(image source: Brill ) Dr. dr. Gijs Dreijer, who defended his PhD at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in June 2021 (supervisor: Prof. Dave De ruysscher ), has just published his monograph. Warmest congratulations! This dissertation was written in the framework of a Joint PhD (Law - History) with the University of Exeter (supervisor: Prof. Maria Fusaro), funded through the ERC Consolidator Grant "Average - Transaction Costs and Risk Management during the First Globalization (Sixteenth-Eighteenth Centuries)".  Abstract: As the fall-out of the Ever Given Suez canal blockage shows, an ancient instrument like General Average (GA) is still highly relevant in redistributing risks and costs in maritime trade. REMINDER: CORE Seminar in Legal Theory under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Laurent DE SUTTER: Jean d'Aspremont on "After Meaning" (Brussels: VUB, 16 FEB 2023 [HYBRID EVENT])

Image
After Meaning Introduction Jean d'Aspremont's presentation will draw on his latest book entitled ‘ After Meaning. The Sovereignty of Forms in International Law ’. In this book, d’Aspremont argues that the lawyer always arrives after meaning has already slipped away from the form. It is not that the lawyer should have come earlier to have a chance to catch meaning. Meaning, as this presentation argues, never stays in the form, for it is always deferred. It is one of the main claims of this presentation that meaning is perpetually absent from the forms of the legal discourse. In the absence of meaning, the lawyer is left with forms, only forms that point away to other forms. Biographical note Jean d'Aspremont is Professor of International Law at Sciences-Po Law School and Chair of Public International Law at the University of Manchester.
