TEACHING: The New Academic Year 2023-2024

With the start of the new academic year, positions in academia traditionally change. These are the main modifications for our group as of 1 October:

  • drs. Rodrick Van der Smissen will start as fulltime academic assistant for the courses Politieke Geschiedenis van België (Prof. Dhondt) and Historische en Vergelijkende Inleiding tot het Publiekrecht  (Prof. Dhondt), while pursuing his PhD research on Roman law and insolvency in the 19th century under the direction of Prof. Dave De ruysscher
  • dr. Stefano Cattelan (Carlsberg Fondet Internationalisation Grant) started to teach the course History and Theory of International Law at the Brussels School of Governance, last August
  • dr. Wouter De Rycke remains on board until February to concentrate on the scientific valorisation of his PhD research
  • drs. Louis Debersaques joined us as PhD-candidate on the EOS-project on Construction and Legal History (Prof. dr. Dave De ruysscher/Prof. dr. Stephanie Van de Voorde (Architecture))
  • Mr. Maxim Hermans (alumnus 2023) will teach seminars as 10% teaching associate in the course Historische Inleiding tot het Privaatrecht (Prof. dr. Dave De ruysscher), within the department of Private Law and Economic Law
With the retirement of Prof. dr. Serge Gutwirth, Prof. Frédéric Audren (Sciences Po) has accepted to temporarily join the department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Law, as guest lecturer (JURI). His main affiliation and teaching will be with our colleagues from LSTS. In view of Prof. Audren's tremendous track record in legal history, we are most honored that he accepted to become an affiliate member of CORE as well.

Dr. Elisabeth Bruyère (TA, EUTopia Connected Learning Community Legal History) becomes an unpaid affiliate in our department.

Drs. Wouter De Rycke (PhD-researcher on FWO Junior Fundamental Research Project G015420N The Legal Construction of Peace, 1815-1870. Networks and Arguments ) will publicly defend his PhD-dissertation Justifying Utopia. A Legal History of the International Peace Movement (1815-1873) (576 p., submitted with the permission of the Board of the Faculty of Law and Criminology on 29 June 2023 and approved for public defense by the jury on 4 September 2023) on Thursday 14 September 2023  at 15:00 .  Wouter holds a Bachelor of Arts in Language and Literature (UGent, 2012), and a Bachelor and a Master of Laws (UGent, 2015 and 2017). Early in the Spring of 2020, he was a visiting researcher ( Gast ) at the Max Planck Institute for Legal Theory and Legal History (Frankfurt am Main). Martti Koskenniemi (University of Helsinki, doctor honoris causa of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 2023 ) will hold a public keynote entitled:  The Law of an International Civil Society: The Road not Taken This lecture will take place in Room I.0.02  on the VUB's Campus of Humanities, Sciences and Engineering at 09:45 .
