Raphaël Cahen


Raphaël Cahen joined the research center as of 1 Jan 2017 as FWO Incoming Pegasus² Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow (2017-2019). In 2017, Raphael was a Guest lecturer in the Department of Political Sciences for the course European history (First Year Bachelor of Social Sciences). From 1 January 2020 to 31 August 2020, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow of the VUB. 

He studied Law (Aix-Marseille University, 2006), Political Sciences (LMU Munich, 2005) and History of political Doctrines (University of Perugia 2006). In 2014, he obtained his joint PhD in Law (Aix-Marseille University) and Political Sciences (LMU Munich), published by De Gruyter in 2017 as Friedrich Gentz (1764-1832): Penseur post-Lumières et acteur du nouvel ordre européen.

In the academic year 2020–2021, Raphaël was in residence at the Studium in Orléans as a fellow. More details here. In November 2021, He was back at VUB as postdoctoral researcher (OZR) and guest professor.

Since September 2022, Raphaël is a fulltime postdoctoral scholar at the University of Giessen. He remains at the VUB as 10% Guest lecturer for the course Rechtsgeschiedenis/Legal History and is a member of the EUTopia Connected Learning community « Legal History ».

He is currently writing his second book on « International Law at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1793-1939): Socio-history of international lawyers », thanks to a residence at CY Institute for Advanced studies. https://advancedstudies.cyu.fr/english-version/browsing/fellows-visitors-visitors/fellows-in-residence/current-year

Drs. Wouter De Rycke (PhD-researcher on FWO Junior Fundamental Research Project G015420N The Legal Construction of Peace, 1815-1870. Networks and Arguments ) will publicly defend his PhD-dissertation Justifying Utopia. A Legal History of the International Peace Movement (1815-1873) (576 p., submitted with the permission of the Board of the Faculty of Law and Criminology on 29 June 2023 and approved for public defense by the jury on 4 September 2023) on Thursday 14 September 2023  at 15:00 .  Wouter holds a Bachelor of Arts in Language and Literature (UGent, 2012), and a Bachelor and a Master of Laws (UGent, 2015 and 2017).
